Located up in the Atlas Mountains, Imlil is a small village community that has become a popular destination with tourists. It is considered the end of the road both figuratively and literally as the tarmac roads of the Atlas Mountains end in the village.
One of the main reasons tourists visit Imlil is due to its proximity to the mountain of Jebel Toubkal. A tough climb, even for experienced hikers, the mountain can be too strenuous for many to do in one expedition. Imlil is a good place to set up a base camp before attempting to reach the summit.
Imlil Morocco: Morocco's Most Breathtaking Scenery
Although the village is fairly remote, it is still a busy and vibrant place. For tourists there are gift shops selling everything from arts and crafts to handmade jewelery. Traditional clothing of the region is also available to buy and it is not unique to see tourists wearing a combination of headscarves and traditional Moroccan dress. As well as the mountain Jebel Toubkal, Imlil is also the gateway to the rest of the Atlas Mountain range and the village is full of guides offering to lead trips through it. Beyond the village there are no man made roads and the landscape is as it was for centuries. The terrain is tricky, so for hikers and climbers new to the area it is worth hiring one of the many guides from the village. Using pack horses and mules, these guided expeditions are an exciting experience and allow you to take in some of Morocco's most breathtaking scenery.
The city of Marrakesh is to the north of Imlil and is located about 40 miles away. Marrakesh is usually the starting point for most tourists, itself a prime vacation destination. Getting to Imlil from Marrakesh is fairly easy as there are several taxi companies that will make the run regularly, although this can be expensive. If you have the taste for adventure you can attempt to haggle with a local resident who may do deliveries to Imlil or even live there themselves. This is a common practice and many local drivers pick up tourists direct from their hotels.
